- Propylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, transparent viscous liquid with good hygroscopicity and moisturizing properties. It can be oxidized into propionaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and acetic acid at high temperatures, but it is relatively stable to heat and light, and more stable at low temperatures. The molecular formula of propylene glycol is C3H8O2, the molecular weight is 76.10, the melting point is -60 , and the boiling point is 187 (other data show that the boiling point is 188.2 ). Physical Properties: Propylene glycol is a colorless, transparent, slightly sweet viscous liquid with a slightly spicy taste. It is miscible in water, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, and soluble in ether. It can be dissolved in many essential oils, but it is not miscible with petroleum ether, paraffin and oils. Chemical Properties: Propylene glycol has strong solubility and reactivity, and can participate in a variety of chemical reactions. It can react with organic acids to form esters, and react with alkyl sulfuric acid or halogenated hydrocarbons to form ethers.
- Propylene glycol is soluble in water, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, and is also soluble in ether and many essential oils; it is insoluble in petroleum ether, paraffin and grease.
